Additional Information
Treatment of Wood:
At present, Minnesota is not requiring treatment documentation. However, the Minnesota Dept of Agriculture is in the process of finalizing a certification program for wood treatment including proper kiln equipment, etc.
There are three approved treatment methods:
- 1. Removal of bark and the outer one-half inch of sapwood
- 2. Kiln drying of firewood to US Dept Agriculture specs
- 3. Heat treating firewood to US Dept Agriculture specs
Firewood that is harvested and remains in Minnesota does not need a Federal Shield. However, firewood that originates in a quarantined area is required to have a stamp, sticker, or permit with the federal shield on the package label or invoice. Areas infested with pests are placed under quarantine.
